We appreciate the comments made by the reader and the interest shown in our article. (ref: Indian J Pathol Microbiol 2008;51:481-4.We agree that the smears stained with conventional (Romanovsky) stains only, show 'negative images' of acid fast bacilli and special stains can be used if suppurative morphology is seen in the needle aspirates. However, we disagree with the observation that the negative images of the mycobacteria were seen in our slide.

Negative images of mycobacteria are reported to be seen by many studies. But the mycobacteria should be seen on the subsequent Z-N staining. [1],[2] We have experience with them too [Figure 1] and [Figure 2]. In our article we have specifically noted that the Z-N staining was negative.

We reviewed the slides again and found neither refractile mycobacteria nor foam cells containing bacilli in the background. We feel that the reader might have misinterpreted the protein aggregates.

We once again thank the reader for the interest shown in our article.
