Dear Readers,

Prof. M Balaraman Nair, past president of the IAPM (1997), passed away on August 13, 2017. He was 85. He completed his MBBS at Trivandrum Medical College in 1956 and MD in JJ Hospital and Grant Medical College, Bombay, in 1961. In a long and illustrious career, he has donned many roles. He headed the pathology departments in the government medical colleges in Calicut, Kottayam, and Trivandrum and the PSG Medical College in Coimbatore after retirement. He was principal in the medical colleges in Kottayam, Calicut, and Trivandrum and retired from government service as the Director of Medical Education. Retirement age in those days was 55. He had a long stint in the private sector and was the medical director and CEO of the DDRC SRL in Trivandrum till his last.

In his long-multifaceted career, he occupied many other positions which included President, State Medical Council, Chairman, State Board of Medical Research, Dean, Faculty of Medicine in the universities of Kerala and Calicut, Chairman, Indian College of Pathologists, and the President, International Academy of Pathologists, Indian Division.

Mentored by the late Prof. Thangavelu, who for long was Professor of Pathology and Principal in Trivandrum Medical College, Balaraman Nair himself was a beacon for many of the pathologists in Kerala. He had a keen interest in Autopsy which he was fond of doing and teaching. He was known to conduct autopsies even when in the busiest of administrative posts. As many would recall, his was an active presence in any academic meeting whether in Kerala or at the national level.

He had a boyish passion and enthusiasm for the subject which was infectious and which he retained till the very end. He will be remembered by the pathologist community of India as a great teacher and an astute pathologist with a keen eye for detail.
