Many strains of  Escherichia More Details coli associated with urinary tract infection (UTI) produce siderophore when compared to commensals. This observation is similar to the findings of the study conducted by Mandal et al. [3] on 30 isolates of uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC); siderophore production was seen in all the isolates (100%) causing UTI. As it is required for iron uptake by the UPEC inside the human host and is essential for the survival of the organism.

Cell morphology and molecular biology studies have revealed that UPEC expresses siderophore production peculiar to the strains of E. coli causing UTI, as described by Raksha et al.[4]

Ire A and Iro N are recently identified siderophore receptors. Molecular epidemiologic evidence from several studies has demonstrated an increased prevalence of Iro N among UTI isolates, relative to the fecal isolates (controls). This suggests that Iro N functions as a siderophore receptor and is a urovirulence factor for UTI, as described by recent study in 2002 by Russo et al.[5]

So recent studies have shown significant difference in the siderophore production between UPEC and controls by conventional as well as molecular methods. This suggests that siderophore production acts as one of the urovirulence marker of UPEC.
